Experimental Experimenting

At some point in the middle of our time in isolation (don’t ask me for exact dates because I’m under the impression everything happened last week when it probably was two months ago) we came together to figure out how to move MXTW online this summer.

Shortly after we started figuring out logistics we realized we needed to experiment on ourselves to see if what we were imagining was actually possible. We split up our exercises between each other to try and figure out what would work, what needed modification, and what just wouldn’t be possible. We then built our own classrooms and pretended to be each other’s participants, experimenting with our own experimental activities. We slow motion raced in our yards, vocalized like chainsaws in our living rooms and shaped with objects we found around us.

My neighbors are probably beginning to wonder exactly what is going on at our house.

Luckily for us we found that with slight adjustments most of what we do could be created within our own homes in front of a camera. In our group exploration practice sessions we tweaked and added exercises, helping each other with ideas on what would work best. It was a blast. A whole lot of work, but luckily we directors live for the moments we get to play. This part of the process was a lot of fun and I’m glad it could help give us a break from the more difficult aspects of creating an online workshop.
