Session 7: Pineapple Umbrella, Ribbon Game, Move with Resistance

Session 7 was amazing. Gweth will have a nice thorough write up on it in the next couple days. It takes her a few hours to write those awesome indepth posts, and she’s not had a few hours to spare since we divided into small groups. Long story short: For session 7 we reviewed authors, gave the participants the style selection sheets, and played some more advanced exercises.

Gibberish Wars: 2 leaders and 2 groups of followers battle it out (or have a civil conversation) using gestures and nonsense noises. The leader makes a set of gestures and noises. When they have stopped, the followers mimic the leader. Theย opposingย leader responds, as do their followers.

Pineapple Umbrella: pictures taken by Hunter. Big thanks! I was leading this exercise and we needed to document how awesome shapes in reaction to “turquoise polecat”, “raindrop ant”, and “melanistic jaguar” were. It’s basically moving and shaping with a bit of dada thrown in. Participants respond to the words based on gut reactions to the sounds in the words or the meaning of the words. They remember their shapes, so when the leader cycles through the words you can get them to transition from “raindrop ant” to “hare’s foot” on a 10 count or anything else you want to see.

After that we did my personal favorite: the ribbon game.

And then Jim talked about the next game, and because Jim moves in an interesting way when orating, I decided to shoot that.

And then he and Gweth demoed the next exercise: Move with Resistance

Here’s what that looks like with a looooong shutter speed:
